Andrew Elliot - UK. Tweeds, throws and rugs.
For centuries the Scottish Borders have produced Tweeds - in fact the
name 'Tweed' immediately conjures up a picture of the Border hills and
valleys. The textile company is based at Forest Mill, Selkirk in the
heart of the Borderland, a mill which has been engaged in the making
of fine fabrics since 1838. The mill is of special historic interest,
being one of Scotland's 'listed buildings', and protected by
legislation.
The weaving mill is still very much alive and flourishing in this
small family business, run by Andrew Elliot with over 60 years as a
textile manufacturer, wife Margaret, son Robin and daughter Vivienne.
Andrew Elliot received his City and Guilds medal in 1948 closely
followed by a textile Degree in 1950 from the Scottish College of
Textiles. His work on design and marketing began in the Scottish
Borders moving on to Yorkshire and Ireland.
He then developed his consultancy business in 1960, using his
experience as a manufacturer, advising companies involved in yarn
production and weaving, covering Southern Ireland, England, Japan and
Western Scotland, UK. In 1973 Andrew, with Margaret as company
secretary, started producing his own tweeds, rugs, throws, ties and
scarves from Forest Mill using shuttle operated looms. Due to the type
of looms used all our fabrics possess a smooth selvedge and can be
produced wider than using modern looms - widths of up to 84" -
suitable for bedcovers. Vivienne joined as secretary in 1993, followed
by Robin in 1996, who graduated from the Scottish College of Textiles
with an honours degree in textiles and marketing.
