Baskerville and Lindsay Ltd was founded in Chorlton-Cum-Hardy,
Manchester in 1923 by Walter Baskerville, chief designer for autoclave
manufacturer Chas W. Cook & Sons of Birmingham and Jack Lindsay a
university laboratory technician.
In the early days, the company manufactured testing equipment for the
thriving Manchester textile industry in addition to centrifuges, and
anaerobic jars for the emerging chemical/pharmaceutical industries and
universities.
Ownership of the company passed to Mr Baskerville`s two sons Clifford
and Kenneth. In the mid 1950`s; and during the next two decades the
business prospered with defence related contracts, the rapid
development of the chemical and nuclear industries, and the growth in
government and university research laboratories. Major projects from
that period include safety in coal-mines (flame propagation studies),
fibre optic nightsights for the Ministry of Defence, and steam
corrosion testing for the nuclear industry. The company moved to larger
premises in Chorlton to meet this demand, and the business continues
today on the same site.
The mid 1980's proved to be a difficult time for UK manufacturers;
Baskerville (and its competitors) suffered from cutbacks in government
research funding and universities. The Baskerville brothers sold the
business in 1987. Under new owners the business name was changed to
Baskerville Scientific Ltd and, then in 1994, to Baskerville (Reactors
and Autoclaves) Ltd.
The current management of Dr. Dunn (Chairman) and Steve Robertson
(Managing Director) are both professional engineers with backgrounds in
testing, research and development. They have introduced a policy of
investment in IT, Training, Marketing and Product Development, which
has resulted in steadily increasing sales and exports since the mid
1990's.
The past association with Chas W. Cook & Sons was revived in 1991 when
the latter ceased trading and Dr Alan Sharp, Chairman of the U.K. High
Pressure Technology Association and formerly Managing Director of
Cook`s, joined Baskerville as marketing consultant.
Baskerville's equipment and systems are employed across a wide spectrum
of industrial, research and educational establishments in the United
Kingdom and abroad. We list here a selection of users from our UK
