Halo Foods - Manufacturer and designer of snack bars with a functional

Our beginnings as a honey farm are a long way from today’s high tech
business. The company began life as Holgates Honey Farm, established
in Aberaeron in the 1960s. Its founder, James Holgate, made honey ice-
cream and honey based food items for the tourist trade in Wales. A
decade later, Peter Saunders and his wife, Judith, were on holiday in
the area and had a honey ice-cream at the quayside kiosk. It seemed
quite natural to remark ‘wouldn’t it be lovely to work here.’ Peter,
then a chemical engineer, had already been looking for a business
opportunity – preferably in food.
A year after their visit to Aberaeron, Peter spotted an advertisement
in the Daily Telegraph - ‘Holgates Honey Farm in rural Wales seeks a
Production Manager.’ Within a short time, he had given up his career
with BP, and joined the honey farm. And within a year, Peter
approached James Holgate to buy the business from him. Aged 25 and
with no money, Peter was unable to persuade the banks to support him,
so James lent Peter L10,000 so he could buy the business!
Over the next few years, the business grew and began manufacturing
fruit bars for the health food trade. The business outgrew the small
quayside factory in Aberaeron and moved to Tywyn in 1980. A growing
reputation for developing and manufacturing health food bars attracted
the attention of Rowntree, who approached Peter with an offer to buy
the business. In 1983, Peter accepted and Holgates Honey Farm became
part of the international group.
