FKI Energy Technologies - Manufacturer of equipment for the

Hawker Siddeley Switchgear at present employs 220 people and operates
on a 24 acre site. In addition to this area the company owns a sports
field (10 acres) and 9 acres of other land conisting of the car park
and forestry land. Milestones for the company include:-
1941 - South Wales Switchgear formed at Treforest - originally owned
by Whitehead Switchgear. Traditionally South Wales Switchgear have
been involved in the design and manufacture of 1 1kV - 33kV switchgear
and DC type switchgear for naval projects.
1946 - Taken over by Aberdare Holdings and moved to the existing site
at Blackwood.
1973 - Aberdare Holdings purchased by the Hawker Siddeley Group.
1990 - South Wales Switchgear merged with Brush Switchgear at
Loughborough but both companies retained their own identity and
operated as autonomous companies.
1992 - South Wales Switchgear and Brush Switchgear merged to become
Hawker Siddeley Switchgear Limited. At its highest point the Blackwood
site employed over 2000 people and one of their main boasts was the
success of the training of engineering apprentices between 1961 and
1966 when there were 600 young people going through the factory at
various stages of training.
1996 - Hawker Siddeley Switchgear acquired by FKI plc.
1998 - Hawker Siddeley Switchgear move to a Switchgear Centre of
Excellence at Blackwood, South Wales.
Blackwood is within the Caerphilly County Borough Council and has a
population of 24,000. However, within a 20 mile radius of the town
there is a 700,000 population. Newport is within 10 miles and Cardiff
16 miles.
