The company started during the early part
of the second world war
(1939). A well known engineer of that period called Stapleton made
transformers in his chicken shed.
During the post war period management
acquired various companies and
became a major UK source of electronic instruments such as voltmeters
oscilloscopes and signal generators.
The business established headquarters at Hainault in Essex. Factories
were opened at Wrexham and Bishops Stortford.
By 1972 the business had 1200 employees and it had become a public
company called Advance Electronics.
In addition to running excellent apprentice schemes the company
published a school masters bible for teaching physics.
The company was also making dc power supplies and an American battery
manufacturer (Gould Inc.) wanting a European stake saw some synergy
and acquired the entire company.
Gould also bought various other European companies. By 1983 Gould
wanted to focus on it's core products and two managers at the CVT
factory at Wrexham (now Advance Park) did a management buyout.

EFEN Engineers - Manufacturer of electrical, power and industrial
fuses.
EFEN was founded in 1922 by Otto Frees in Neudorf, which is now
Martinsthal and part of the city of Eltville. The original activities
concentrated on electrical fuses for the automotive industry and strip
type fuses for battery powered vehicles.
The product line was then rapidly broadened by the addition of fuses
for all kind of applications including current-limiting fuses for low-
and medium-voltage power distribution systems.
Over the years EFEN introduced numerous pace-making products to the
market, serving customers requests for more compactness in size,
higher levels of operator safety and ease of application.
In 1985 EFEN was sold to the joint stock company Heinrich Industrie
AG, Essen. This merger enhanced EFEN's financial background without
compromising the company's character and thus triggered a period of
sustained growth.
EFEN products such as medium voltage and low voltage HRC fuse-links
and HRC fuse-switches are well-known throughout the European market.
EFEN is playing a leading roll in the development of fuse-switches
based on NH fuse-links. These switching devices utilize the fuse-links
as moving contacts and are operated by the fuse-carrier. They provide
optimum protection against electric shock, safety in operation under
load conditions and allow for most compact and cost efficient design
of low voltage power distribution systems.
Aside of these products the EFEN manufacturing and sales programme
comprises a wide range of medium and low voltage high rupturing
capacity fuse-links of various characteristics and designed according
to national and international standards, low voltage fuse bases, fuse
base racks; low voltage current transformers, switch fuses, fuse
switches, accessories such as blown fuse indicators and replacement
handles as well as a variety of fuse-links for special applications
such as UPS- and telecommunication systems.
Today EFEN Germany employs about 250 people in modern manufacturing

Horstmann Gmbh - Manufacture of faulted circuit indicators, earth
fault indicators, voltage detectors and phase comparators.
The company Dipl.-Ing. H. Horstmann GmbH was founded in 1946 by
Diplom-Ingenieur Heinrich Horstmann in Heiligenhaus.
In the difficult post-war period the first priority was to repair
overhead cables and lighting facilities.
The frequent cable defects in the energy supply networks led in the
same year to the development of a simple short circuit detector. Later
on additional safety equipment, such as earthing devices, shorting
devices and voltage testers were produced.
The many requirements of German and foreign energy supply companies
and technological change led to constant adaptation of the products
and also to a widening of the product spectrum. For example, what
started as a simple electromechanical short circuit detector has
developed into a precision piece of electronic equipment.
In 1960 a branch of the company was opened in K?rperich, in the Eifel
near the border with Luxembourg.
In 1990 a new building was erected and commissioned in Heiligenhaus.
It houses the management headquarters, the technical design and
development department, and the Heiligenhaus production facility. All
the electronic short circuit detectors are manufactured here, as are
the electronic voltage testers with self-checking facility, and the
earthing and shorting devices.
The specialisation in a small number of product areas, the application
of high quality requirements as well as the expansion of the
Engineering department have ensured that the company's products have
found world-wide application and acceptance.
