Degero Yachts - This Finnish boat builder features 28 to 35 foot
performance cruisers.
The Boatyard Kristeri & Co was founded in 1980. The founders, Risto
Kristeri and Seppo Mäkelä are still with the company. Risto Kristeri is
the managing director and is responsible for the quality of the
woodwork and administration. Seppo Mäkelä is responsible for the
quality of fibreglass work.
At first the company operated from rental premises but on 1.7.1980 the
company moved to their own premises in Tähtelä, Inkoo.
The first model was the Degerö 28 MS, which is the yard's own design
and was the only model until 1985. Along with the Degerö 28 MS the yard
produced production tools for the other new yards setting up production
sites in the neighbourhood.
In 1985 the yard launched the first Degerö 35 S that was designed by
the Swedish designer Håkan Södergren. With this boat the yard was
elevated to a new class.
In 1990 the first Degerö 33 DS was completed, it was designed by the
Finnish designer Hans Groop and was a deck-salon boat. The boat was
similar in concept to the smaller Degerö 28 MS but the Degerö 33 DS is
a pure sailing boat.
In 1992 the first Degerö 33 S was built. This boat has the same hull as
the Degerö 33 DS but has a windshield rather than a cabin.
In 1998 the yard presented a new Degerö 38 DS. The designer is the
Degerö-Team with the young Finn Olli Salmela doing a big part of the
design as well. This boat was designed for all seas and for all
conditions.
In the fall of 1999 Risto Kristeri, Seppo Mäkelä and the Kristeri & Co
Boatyard founded a new company called Degerö Boat Oy for production and
sales of Degerö yachts. Degerö Boat Oy built bigger and more modern
premises for the production of Degerö boats in Tähtelä, Inkoo.
At first there were four members of staff. Today both yards employ
eight people. During 2002 the yard will employ more workers in response
to the increase in demand for Degerö boats.
The Degerö boats have been produced as follow:
Degerö 28 MS 122 boats
Degerö 33 DS 23 boats
Degerö 33 S 10 boats
Degerö 35 S 27 boats
Degerö 38 DS 4 boats
In 2003 Degerö Boat Oy will present the new Degerö 36 DS sailing boat,
designed by Håkan Södergren.
The company currently has a long order list and the future of Degerö
boats looks very good.
Degerö Boat Oy has importers in many countries in Europe and in Japan.

Elan Marine - Builder of 30 - 45 foot light displacement cruisers.
Nowadays Elan Marine is competing in a very aggressive international
market of production boats. Elan range of boats consists of fast family
cruisers, (new E31) E 333, E 36, E 362, E 40 and E 45 all designed by
one of world best sailing boat designer Rob Humphreys.
Our opinion is that Elan Marine as a small factory from Slovenia, with
over 30 years experience in GRP boats building, has to offer sailing
cruisers that:
Are designed better in sense of seaworthiness than majority of the
serial boats
Are performing very well under sails (better than average)
Are built in a robust traditional way (hand laid laminates, all parts
strictly laminated together), always using components of high quality
Are having individual character appropriate for their specific size and
individual looks
Some of the models allow semi-custom solutions on-board
These characteristics together are definitely distinguishing Elan boats
from majority of mass produced competition boats today.
Humphreys' philosophy is fairly simple. The essential criterion is that
a yacht must earn great pride of ownership. It is not enough to say
that for a racing yacht this qualification is simply to win races while
for a cruising yacht it is to ?, well?, what single expression can one
possibly find to define success in a cruising yacht?
It is more complex than that. Of course, for the owner of a racing
yacht a race winning ability is essential, and this has been delivered
as a characteristic time and time again by Humphreys' racing yachts;
but usually there has been more to appreciate, i.e. the manner of that
winning. Similarly, now, the success of a cruising yacht is measurable
not by the volume of its interior and the number of berths that are
contained, but by a myriad other features and characteristics that can
benefit from the sort of optimisation that has had to be part of the
racing yacht world.

J Composite - French manufacturer of J boats. Includes photos, company
information, and inquiry form. In French and English.
J Composite was created in December 1994, in Les Sables dOlonne.
The story begins during the France Championship at La Rochelle :
Several J/22 and J/24 were provided by JBoats. Jeff Johnstone, JBoats
President, and Didier Le Moal, J Composite Manager, met for the first
time.
On December 20, 1994, the first J/92 made in France is delivered for
the London Boat Show.
Few months after, J/80 production starts. The first J/80 is launched
for the 1995 Spi Ouest France. During its first existing year, J
Composite built 8 J/92s and 10 J/80s. Almost all the boats were
exported, principally to UK.
The J/80 class is created in 1997. Today, the organisation gathers
about 50 members.
In 1998, J/110 & J/120 are built in Les Sables. 2 years after, their
little brother, the J/105 is produced, to answer the high demand of
this monotype, more than 400 boats sailing
over the world. The same year, Racing J/92 is introduced : an even more
racer and lighter boat than the standard J/92.
The story of J/Boats is a classic entrepreneurial tale: With a $20,000
investment, and a speedy 24-foot sailboat that Rod Johnstone built in
his garage, Rod & his brother Bob Johnstone went into business. That
was 1977. Now, that boat (the J/24), has become the most popular
recreational offshore keelboat in the world.
The Johnstone family has made an undeniable mark on the sailing world.
In addition to the 5,300 J/24s cruising the waves, there are nearly
4,000 more J/Boats, ranging from the International J/22 to the 53'
J/160, that sailing enthusiasts have bought at prices ranging from
$10,000 to $850,000.
While other manufacturers may sell more boats, the Johnstones have won
the high-end, performance-oriented segment of the market. Theirs is the
so-called racer/cruiser category: boats that perform well enough to
race but which are comfortable and easy enough for the family to
daysail and cruise. It is with knowledgeable, experienced sailors that
the Johnstones have done best.
The story begins in 1975. Rod, then an ad salesman for the sailing
trade magazine, Soundings, and an active one-design sailor decided to
build a sailboat he had been designing since completing
a Westlawn School of Yacht Design correspondence course in the 60's.
With $400-worth of fiberglass and wood, some rigging and hardware left
over from a Soling of Bob's, he built the 24' x 9' wide RAGTIME on
weekends in his 3 car garage at his home in Stonington, Connecticut.
During the summer of 1976, with an all family crew aboard, RAGTIME beat
everything in sight. Rod realized he had created something special.
Enter Everett Pearson, the owner of TPI Composites, Inc., a highly
respected boat builder in Warren Rhode Island. He was quite taken with
Rod's design and agreed to produce the boat on spec in return for the
U.S. building rights. Display ads in Soundings got the word out. That
winter they set up a makeshift factory in an old textile mill in nearby
Fall River, Massachusetts, and began popping out J/24s.
There the effort might well have remained had it not been for the
marketing experience of brother Bob, a vice president of marketing at
AMF/Alcort (the makers of Sunfish sailboats at the time). He saw the
potential in the boat Rod had designed. From 1975 to 1977, Bob had
helped to take Alcort from the red into the black, and then began
trying to convince AMF to start producing a boat similar to the J/24.
But, he says, in spite of overwhelming market research results showing
50% purchase intent in a boat like the J/24 , AMF really didn't care
anything about gaining share of market or investing any more in
sailing. So, in February of 1977, at age 43, Bob left AMF and threw in
his lot with J/Boats.
With Rod contributing the design and Bob investing $20,000 to cover
start-up costs, office space, and advertising, their 50-50 partnership
was launched. Expecting to sell 250 J/24s that first year, they sold
750. Each successive year marks unique achievements in the sport and
industry. While the next generation of Johnstones is now manning the
helm, founders Rod and Bob continue to contribute in the areas of their
strength, design and marketing. Rod's sons Jeff (president) & Alan
(vice-president) and nephew Jim (sales director) manage company
operations & sales from J/Boats Headquarters in Newport, RI. A total of
five of Bob & Rod's sons (Jeff, Alan, Stu, Drake and Phil) serve on
J/Boats, Inc. Board of Directors.

Minuet Yachts - Manufacturer of small sailboats for sailing in
recreational waters. These micro boats are small enough to fit on car
roof racks or into an estate car or SUV.
These New and unique yachts were introduced in 1999 after a 3 year
development programme to optimise the design.
The smallness is due to the key requirement that these boats can be
used on confined water not usually associated with sailing. Large
Ponds, Small Lakes and even slow rivers or canals can be used for
sailing. The Minuet can also be used on any inland sheltered water such
as reservoirs or water parks and flooded harbours.
Each Minuet is manufactured to exacting standards with components from
established professional manufacturers are employed for key components,
'Relling OneDesign' Sails, 'MB' Masts and GRP specialists.
Assembled in Cornwall, these minuets are 100% made in Britain

Northshore Yachts Ltd - Maker of the Vancouver, Fisher, Southerly, and
Freebird designs, they are located on the Itchenor Reach in Chichester
Harbour, UK. Services include custom building, maintenance, and
refitting.
Northshore honour a tradition of building high quality yachts using the
highest quality materials.
There is still a place for individuality
We have always prided ourselves on the individuality of the yachts we
build. This individuality comes not only from our designers, but also
from our customers.
After all, creating a yacht that you will be happy with, year after
year, needs to be crafted especially for you, from the outset, to
exacting specifications to suit your particular cruising requirements.
We don't believe such a yacht can be made 'off the shelf', and at
Northshore it never will be.
The high degree of customisation we can offer includes the internal
layout of your yacht, deck gear, reefing gear, and instrumentation. In
today's world of factory-built boats, this kind of attention to
individual preferences is rare.
So too is the individual testing and sea trials to which every single
new boat we build is subjected. As you'll discover when you visit us,
we're not remotely like your average yacht company.
